How to block TikTok and Instagram on iPhone
The feeds are built to be reopened without thinking. These are the four ways to put something between your thumb and the icon, from free to firm.
1. Give them a 1-minute App Limit
- Open Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit.
- Open the Social category and tick TikTok and Instagram. If one isn't there, look under Entertainment or use the search field.
- Set the time to 1 minute and tap Add.
After a minute a day, both apps sit behind a "Time Limit" screen. The weakness is the Ignore Limit button on that screen. To remove it, set a Screen Time passcode (Lock Screen Time Settings) and turn on Block at End of Limit. It works best if someone else holds the passcode.
2. Delete the app and block the website
Deleting the app is the oldest trick and still a good one, because reinstalling takes long enough to change your mind. The gap is Safari: both services work in a browser. To close it:
- Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on.
- Open the content restrictions section (named "App Store, Media, Web & Games" or "Content Restrictions" depending on your iOS version), then Web Content.
- Choose Limit Adult Websites. Under Never Allow, add tiktok.com and instagram.com.
This also filters adult sites in every browser on the phone, which you may or may not want. It can't be scheduled, so it suits "I'm done with this app" more than "not during work".
3. Use Downtime for a nightly cut-off
If the problem is scrolling in bed, schedule Settings → Screen Time → Downtime from, say, 22:00 to 07:00 and leave TikTok and Instagram out of Always Allowed. Everything not on that list is blocked for the night. Same caveat as App Limits: without a passcode, Ignore Limit is one tap away.
4. Lock them for a set time with an app blocker
Most people don't want Instagram gone forever. They want it gone for the next 50 minutes. The built-in settings are awkward at that: there is no "block this for an hour, starting now" button.
That is the one job Clam does. You pick TikTok, Instagram and anything else once, in Apple's own app picker. Then a session is one tap: choose 25, 50 or 90 minutes, or any length from 5 minutes to 4 hours, and lock your phone. Until the timer ends, the apps open to a block screen with a single button, "OK, I'll wait". There's no Ignore Limit. The exit that exists is deliberate: hold a button for 10 seconds and your streak resets.
When the timer ends the apps come back on their own. Nothing to switch off, no passcode to find.
What about blocking just Reels or the For You page?
Not possible from outside the app. iOS blocks at the level of a whole app or a whole website; no Screen Time setting or third-party blocker can reach inside Instagram and turn off one tab. If you need DMs but not Reels, the closest you'll get is blocking the app during the hours you work and replying afterwards.
Which to pick
- Done with the app entirely: delete it and block the website.
- Late-night scrolling: Downtime on a schedule.
- A daily cap: a 1-minute or 15-minute App Limit with a passcode someone else keeps.
- Focused blocks during the day: a timed blocker like Clam.
